Understanding Internet Marketing: Laying the Groundwork
Let's be frank here. Internet marketing can be a bit like trying to tame a wild beast. It can seem unpredictable, fast and relentless. But, like my husband Jasper says when encountering a particularly hellish home improvement project (believe me, there's been more than a few), you need to know your beast before you can tame it. In other words, you cannot, and I emphasise on 'cannot', master the art of Internet marketing without first understanding what it involves.
Internet marketing, also known as online marketing or digital marketing, is all about promoting and selling products or services over the Internet. Its vast realm includes numerous disciples among which we have SEO (search engine optimisation), SEM (search engine marketing), content marketing, and social media marketing, to name a few. These are the tools that you need to get acquainted with, and rest assured, by the end of this guide, you indeed will.
The Mighty SEO: Fathoming Google's Whims
Have you ever noticed how certain websites pop up at the top of the list when you're searching for something online? That's largely due to something called SEO, a.k.a Search Engine Optimisation: the little tool that makes your website more attractive to search engines, and especially to our dear, sometimes whimsical friend, Google.
Remember trying to impress that cute guy or girl in high school? SEO is somewhat like that, but the "cutie" here is Google's algorithm. It's all about using the right keywords, having top-notch website design and functionality, awesome content, brilliant backlinks, and so on. It's like you're dressing up your website for the "Google Prom", and trust me, you definitely want to be the Prom Queen here!
Powering Through SEM
While SEO is the organic, non-paid way of getting your website to the top, Search Engine Marketing, or SEM, is its paid counterpart. Think of SEM as your paid entourage; they’re the guys you pay to look good online. But, remember, more than just paying your way through, it's about investing in the right areas, which could yield a significant rise in your brand visibility online.
Jasper and I had a minor disagreement two years ago about investing in an espresso machine. Jasper was all for the idea while I was sceptical about spending that much on a kitchen appliance. Eventually, we made the purchase and, honestly, I can't express how much value it has added to our lives. Just like that espresso machine, SEM may demand an upfront investment, but it can lead to payoffs you may not even have imagined.
Social Media Marketing: Not Just for LOLs and Likes
You thought social media was just for sharing cat videos and comparing your lunch with friends? Well, that's just one fruity layer of this multi-layered dessert. At its core, social media is about connection, influence and reach. It's a tool to express your brand’s persona, gather audience feedback and promote directly to your target demographics.
Remember the cute guy we were trying to impress? Well, you can take him to the dance, show him your moves, and make him toast to the future at this very platform. But, instead of dance moves, it's your compelling content, engaging discussions and how well you connect with your followers that would do the trick.
Content Marketing: The Story Behind Your Brand
Ever wondered why some brands just seem to have a certain sparkle? They've got a rich, compelling story to tell, and they tell it well. That's the power of content marketing.
Think about your favourite childhood book. Mine was the Tale of Peter Rabbit. Even now, I get excited when I read it to my kids, Tilda and Alden. I love how Beatrix Potter has crafted the story, and despite reading it numerous times, it never gets old. That is exactly how your brand's story should be – compelling, engaging and enduring. And remember, a well-told story is a powerful tool. It can bring your brand to life, engage your audience and ultimately lead to a stronger brand connection.
Email Marketing: Pushing the Envelope
No, email is not dead! Far from it. In fact, if the Internet was a solar system, emails would be the sun, around which everything else revolves. Email marketing gives you the opportunity to reach your audience directly, communicate your offering, and build a long-term relationship.
Like sending out personalised Christmas cards (which Jasper and I still love to do), email marketing can convey the message: "Hey, we remember you, we appreciate you and we've got something special just for you." It's a good feeling, right? Well, that's exactly how your customers should feel too.
Affiliate Marketing: What's in it for them?
Affiliate marketing is a kind of symbiotic relationship where you help others to help yourself. It involves partnering with influencers or websites that can drive traffic to your website or help sell your product, for a share of the profits.
Could you imagine negotiating with your kids to clean their room, promising a slice of their favourite cake as a reward? That’s how affiliate marketing works! You promise your affiliates a slice of the profits (the delicious cake), and in return, they help you clean up the room (drive traffic to your site or sell your product).
Web Analytics: Deciphering the Numbers Game
Last but not least, web analytics. This is the part where we track, measure, and report the performance of our Internet marketing efforts, using tools like Google Analytics.
Think of it as getting your report card at the end of the school year. Except in this case, instead of fretting over grades, you're keen to understand the behaviour of your customers and site visitors, which campaigns worked, which didn't, and how you can improve. See, these numbers are not just boring statistics - they're stories waiting to be understood, and once you decipher them correctly, they play a huge part in your decision-making process.
Mastering the art of Internet marketing becomes much easier when you take the time to understand each tool at your disposal, how they can effectively work to your benefit and lastly, how they all link together to create a successful marketing strategy. With progress, perseverance and a sprinkle of creativity, you can certainly turn Internet marketing from an untamed beast into your obedient and productive pet!
